MENINGITIS ACWY VACCINE
The new Meningitis ACWY vaccines called ‘Menveo’ or ‘Nimenrix’, are licensed in the UK for use in the prevention of serious strains of meningitis.
Both brands of the Meningitis ACWY vaccine offer protection against invasive meningococcal diseases of strains ‘A’, ‘C’, ‘W’ & ‘Y’. Moreover, the vaccine is now recommended for new college and university students in the UK.
Meningitis W is a deadly and highly aggressive strain and is now on the rise in the UK. Consequently, this has led to an almost 1000% increase in known cases over the last 6 years. As a result, Public Health England says the Meningitis ACWY vaccine will above all help to protect against Meningitis W.
Therefore, young people starting university or college in autumn are being urged to be vaccinated against meningitis. New university students are at risk because they often mix closely with groups of unfamiliar people. Some of these people may unknowingly carry the bug.
Meningitis W infection is fatal in one in 10 cases. Furthermore it can lead to long-term health problems including deafness, epilepsy and also amputations.
